§ 27-216. Not-for-hire status of taxicabs.

  • (a)

    Each taxicab is presumed to be on duty and ready to serve the general public for hire. If a driver is not for hire and does not intend to provide taxicab service, the driver shall comply with the following requirements.

    (1)

    The driver shall place a sign, to be provided by the holder, in the taxicab indicating the words "NOT FOR HIRE" printed in letters not less than three inches in height with a stroke of not less than three eights ( 3/8 ) inch. The letters shall be on a backing of sufficient thickness to not easily bend.

    (2)

    When a driver is not for hire, the driver shall display the sign in an upright position in the front window on the right side of the taxicab so as to be easily seen and read from outside of the taxicab.

    (b)

    A driver who is not for hire shall not park or stand a taxicab on a taxicab stand or on a public street or public property within five hundred (500) feet of a taxicab stand unless it is parked at a metered parking space.
